Ciudad Bolivar District
Some foreign visitors refer to Ciudad Bolívar as “the favelas,” but this comparison is inaccurate and can reinforce stereotypes. Ciudad Bolívar is a working-class district where visitors can experience a more authentic side of Bogotá. Although, like any urban area, it is important to remain aware of your surroundings, the neighborhood is not simply defined by danger.
To get there, take Bogotá’s public transportation system, TransMilenio, and then transfer to TransMiCable, one of the longest cable-car systems in the city. The cable car takes you to El Paraíso, a neighborhood known for its colorful murals and Mirador del Paraíso, which offers impressive views over the southern part of Bogotá.
If you would like to do more than take a walking tour, there are several additional activities that support local entrepreneurs, such as:
1.screen workshop
Andrea Ochoa is a local guide and graphic designer from the community. She created a colorful design featuring the seven mountains and the TransMiCable, which she uses to teach visitors how to stamp their own T-shirt for COP 180,000. Alternatively, you can purchase a pre-printed T-shirt for COP 80,000.
Andrea also creates handmade crafts, including earrings, magnets, and keychains. Purchasing her work is a great way to support local entrepreneurship in Ciudad Bolívar.
2. grafitti workshop
May Rojas is a local artist who has painted many of the murals in the neighborhood. He offers graffiti workshops for COP 50,000, giving visitors the opportunity to learn about the community’s urban art and create their own designs.
He also runs a shop where you can purchase some of his framed artwork, as well as handmade crafts created by local residents. Supporting his shop helps promote both local artists and community entrepreneurship.
3. Animal Shelter Visit
If you would like to receive lots of love, consider visiting this community animal shelter. Admission is free, and visitors are welcome to make donations of food, medicine, money, or other necessary supplies.
If you visit, it is a good idea to wear old clothes because the dogs are very friendly and may easily jump on you or get you dirty.
